The small town of Campbell River, on British Columbia's Vancouver Island, is famous for its salmon migrations, eco-tourism, and much more.
Campbell River, British Columbia, is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, within view of the mainland. According to its website, the city is the third largest on Vancouver Island after Victoria and Nanaimo and the fourth largest community after the two largest cities and the Municipality of Saanich. Best known for its proximity to the annual migration of Pacific salmon on their way to the spawning grounds, Campbell River features the opportunity to snorkel with the migrating fish, swimming along with them towards their final destination. Campbell RiverCultural Activities in Dubbed the Salmon Capital of the World, Campbell River is dominated by fish-related activities, but the city is about much more than just that. The city has a vibrant cultural life, with museums, theater, and much more. The Haig-Brown Heritage House is one of the major attractions, while the Wei Wai Kum House of Treasures gives visitors the opportunity to see the First Nations culture of the west coast. Theatrical productions are available at various times of the year, and the museum is a good place to capture a sense of the city’s history. The whole family can enjoy a visit to Campbell River. Bazaars and the annual Toy and Craft Sale are fun for all ages, and watching the annual salmon migration through Discovery Passage to their spawning grounds is a highlight of the year. The Cape Mudge Lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction, and the town’s concerts, plays, and other activities help to entertain locals and visitors. Canada Day on July 1st is always a special occasion, and the Salmon Festival is a highlight of the year for residents and visitors, as are the North Island Sewing and Needle Arts Show and the Toy and Craft Sale. With so much to do and see, Campbell River is a good place to experience the life and culture of Vancouver Island. Ecotourism in Campbell River Campbell River is in an ideal location for sports and ecotourism, as the official travel information indicates, Strathcona Park lies to the west, while the east is bordered by the Coastal Mountain Range. Beyond are the Discovery Islands, where visitors can wander and explore the beauties of nature. In the town, the sea is a major attraction, with all kinds of water sports available. Fishing at Discovery Pier is popular for members of the Tyee Club and other enthusiasts of the sport, while the pier’s 182 metres of scenic views attract visitors for the spectacular scenery, as does the river that gives the city its name, now designated a British Columbia Heritage River. Campbell River may not have all of the attractions of larger and more historically diverse cities, but for anyone with an interest in the cycles of nature, the city has a great deal to offer for a short or long visit.
