Along the shores of the Lower Mainland, the picturesque Vancouver beaches welcome visitors year-round be it for a summer tanning session or a winter ocean-side walk.

Imagine sitting on a quiet Vancouver beach, perched on a giant felled tree and looking out to towering mountains across the water. This is Vancouver beach life.

Vancouver beaches are some of the safest and most popular in the world with summer-time lifeguards and no ocean currents. The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation runs the beaches and they remain a favorite location for a family day trip in Vancouver. Here is an overview of the best of the Vancouver beach life.

Enjoy Trendy Kitsilano Beach, Vancouver

The popular Kits Beach is close to the shopping and restaurant district of West 4th Avenue and lies at the north end of Yew St.. A young crowd swarms Kits Beach in the summer months: you'll see beach-goers tossing Frisbees, rolling bocce ball, or running along the shore front. Many also come to enjoy the large saltwater pool at Kits. For a meal with a view, enjoy a table at the award-winning Watermark Restaurant, which serves up fresh seafood on a large patio.

Take the Seawall to Third Beach, Stanley Park

Perhaps the most beautiful Vancouver beach, Third Beach is hidden at Ferguson Point, amongst the coves of Stanley Park. Bike or walk around the Stanley Park Seawall to the secluded, sandy haven of Third Beach. From the shore, admire a clear view out into the ocean and the fantastic evening sunsets.

Explore Beach Avenue and the Beaches in English Bay

Sunset, First (also called English Bay), and Second beaches provide the downtown-dwellers of the West End with a seaside escape. The restaurants and bars along Denman Street and Beach Avenue provide an exciting nightlife while beach volleyball courts, a dog park, and kayak rentals will appeal to the active beach-goer. Watch as families mingle with the young along the seawall to create a vibrant and eclectic beach scene.

Locarno, Spanish Banks, and Jericho Beaches

On Vancouver’s west side, the beaches of Point Grey attract the day-long beach bums who tan, barbecue, and play games with family and friends on the weekends. With neighboring large parks, these beaches also offer plenty of car parking. Get on the water with the Jericho Sailing Association, which rents windsurfers by the hour, or just enjoy the scenery from the sailing club’s mountain-view patio.

From east to west, this strip of waterfront includes five of Vancouver's beaches: Jericho Beach, Locarno Beach, Spanish East, Spanish West, and Spanish Extension.

Clothing Optional Wreck Beach

Perhaps the most famed Vancouver beach, Wreck Beach is known as Vancouver’s clothing-optional beach. This nudist beach, off SW Marine Drive, welcomes free spirits year-round—although for most that’s weather-permitting. The Vancouver beach lies within the boundaries of Pacific Spirit Regional Park and is close the University of British Columia campus.

Outdoor Fun Activities in Vancouver

No matter which Vancouver beach you visit, be sure to breathe in the fresh, clean air and admire the view from the sandy shores. And just because it's possible, take the ultimate challenge of skiing and visiting a Vancouver beach—all in one day!
