Vehicle Preparedness for Summer Driving in BC

A summer road trip is a popular way to experience the people, culture, wildlife and landscapes within British Columbia, Canada. Spanning from the coastal oceanside, heading into mountain passes, and fresh waterways, BC is one of the most diverse and scenic provinces in the country.
Basic Tips to a Successful Trip
For the most part BC roads are well-established and paved unless choosing to go off the beaten path. Tire maintenance and care are an important part of a successful driving experience. Prior to the trip, check the tire pressure and ensure that they are in good condition by checking the tire’s tread depth and wear.
Even well-traveled roads like the Trans Canada Highway can present challenges for any seasoned driver. If relying on cell phone service, realize that BC back roads and smaller populated towns in the countryside and mountains may not have any service at all.
Prepare for the worst case scenarios. If on a road with no cell service and little traffic, being alone for many hours before help arrives may become a reality. Be prepared and drive with care.
Reducing road rage potential is easily accomplished by giving fellow road-users plenty of space. It is also courteous to use the right hand lane or a safe pull-over onto the shoulder of country roads so others can pass during passing lane opportunities.
Additional Steps Renting a Vehicle
When considering a road trip, one must take great care in preparing the vehicle that will be used. If renting, be sure to run through a few key steps before signing the dotted line.
- Cover the rental with proper insurance.
- Inspect the vehicle with a rental representative to make sure the vehicle is in good condition.
- During the inspection, check tire pressure on all four tires and don’t forget the spare tire.
- Ensure that all tools are physically in the car in case of a flat tire.
- Check the oil.
Emergency Gear Packing List
Basic first aid equipment is always a good idea when packing for a road trip. In this particular instance it does not matter whether it’s a personal or rented vehicle. Make sure to include a basic first aid kit in an area that is easily accessible. If you do not have first aid training, it is worth completing a course before departure.
In addition to the first aid kit, it is recommended for highway driving, to pack other gear for personal protection if ever in a situation where the vehicle breaks down unexpectedly.
- Pack a high visibility vest for any reduced visibility situation. A vest can come in handy at night and will caution other drivers as they approach.
- Consider packing a flashlight, preferably a headlamp, just in case the incident occurs at night.
- An extra blanket and lighter are essential survival items to pack for cold and wet nights, potentially stranded for a long period of time.
