Small town historic charm and abundant outdoor activities make Revelstoke, B.C. attractive to sportsmen and sightseers. Glacier National Park is a 45 minute commute.

The founding fathers of Revelstoke, in the 1880’s, must have been in awe of the natural beauty of their proposed town site. Surrounded by the Selkirk and Monashee Mountains with the Columbia River crossing the valley, this prime location creates an ideal setting. Originally, railroad engineers developed the area and miners followed. Well restored Victorian era buildings line the city streets and give Revelstoke historic ambiance. But today, although the Canadian Pacific Railway still remains an important industry, outdoor sports, fishing, hiking, skiing and tourism dominate the scene.

Sights in Town

On the drive into town, two gnarly grizzly bear statues mark the beginning of the city centre. The aptly named Grizzly Plaza is a pedestrian hub where the locals and tourists can find pubs, family restaurants and a Saturday morning Farmer’s Market. Outdoor entertainment adds to the festive ambiance.

Revelstoke’s historical society publishes a guide to a heritage walking tour with details about the many Victorian era homes and businesses that have lost little of their original appeal. The walk goes through town and around adjacent residential areas and includes a visit by several estate sized homes and gardens (some are now B&B’s) beside the Columbia River.

Hiking and Fishing

In the autumn and summer, snow free hiking trails traverse the Columbia River, Revelstoke Lake and expand into the mountain passes. Within the Revelstoke National Park, the lowland Skunk Cabbage Trail is a level hike along the river. The Meadows in the Sky Trail traverses forests and meadow lands in a short loop. A more exhilarating hike on the Summit Trail culminates with spectacular views but involves a steep, steady climb. The small mountain lakes, Balsam Lake, Eva Lake and Jade Lake, can be reached from trails within the park and are restful places to contemplate the natural serenity of the mountains.

For the sportsman who enjoys fly fishing in the Canadian Rockies, rainbow trout and Coho or Chinook salmon frequent the many lakes, rivers and streams in the area. Coordinated fishing trips are available from Revelstoke Fishing Guides (www.revelstokefishingguides.com) or several sporting goods equipments suppliers in town provide fishing gear.

Mountain Activities

The ultimate outdoor sports experience involves a trip across the treetops on a zip line tour. The Revelstoke Mountain Resort (www.revelstokemountainresort.com) provides different levels of tree canopy tours during the non-winter months. Later in the season, winter sports activities abound and the full service ski facility provides everything from beginning ski lessons to helicopter skiing.

In addition to the town sights and mountain experiences, one of the most spectacular routes in Canada is the road through Rogers Pass to Glacier National Park, a 45 minute drive from Revelstoke. Whether it’s the outdoor sports attractions of hiking, fishing or skiing or visiting an historic Canadian mining town, Revelstoke provides a variety of interests.
