Barriere is a small town in a scenic spot north of Kamloops on the Yellowhead Highway. A good place to stop en route from Vancouver to Jasper National Park.

Cradled in the narrow valley between the Caribou range in the west and the Monashees to the northeast and sited at the confluence of the North Thompson and Barriere Rivers, the small town of Barriere is the first major stop north of Kamloops on the Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5).

Its scenic mountain/river location offers over 400 kilometers of mapped and maintained equestrian trails. From Barriere, it is only a short drive to Wells Gray and Jasper National Parks.

Motels and Hotels in Barriere, British Columbia

Both Highway 5 and the Canadian National Railroad run through Barriere within blocks of all accommodations, but with the windows closed and the air conditioner on the traveler will find a reasonably quiet night. But why on earth has no one built a lodge on the bank of one of the rivers, away from the highway?

Information taken from the 2009 edition of the British Columbia Approved Accommodation Guide or from inspection of the facilities.

Restaurants in Barrier, BC

All the restaurants are easy to find, located on the Yellowhead Highway.

  • A&W/Barriere Esso – the standard franchise fare, for a quick stop.
  • Armour Mountain Pub & Restaurant – adjacent to Knights Inn, and evidently a popular spot judging from the number of cars in the parking lot.
  • Station House Restaurant/ Great Barriere Reef Pub – An extensive menu with standard fare and reasonable prices. Nothing special, but good food well-presented (the cole slaw, for example, was topped with a little triangle of watermelon for color) and served piping hot. Also a full parking lot when Suite101 stopped in.
  • Chinook Cove Golf – Just north of Barriere on Boulder Mtn. Rd, the course restaurant is open 11:00 am to 3:00 pm for lunch only. Fancy burgers, beef dip, sandwiches.
  • Lily's Cafe – Although it is listed on the town web site, Suite101 was unable to find this cafe (call or email the town info site)
  • Sam's Pizza –Right across the highway from Station House. The best pizza in town, at a guess...
