Great Eats in Cowichan Bay Village, BC, CanadaEnjoy Delicious Local Bread, Cheese and Ice Cream with Artisan Food
The old fishing village of Cowichan Bay an hour north of Victoria, BC is a great place for foodie shopping & snacking with a local bakery, cheesemaker and ice cream, too.
True Grain Bakery mills their own flour and bakes many varieties of bread including those made with Red Fife wheat grown just up the road. The 5.92 km Loaf brings the hundred mile diet to a whole new level! True Grain also mills BC spelt and Kamut creating tasty breads like the spelt baguette or a pumpkin seed Kamut loaf that are gaining in popularity. Considered alternate wheat, these easier to digest grains are more flavorful and have higher nutrient values than regular wheat. Now that the healthy stuff is out of the way… how about chocolate buns? True Grain’s pastries are impossible to resist like the dark chocolate studded buns, apple strudel, cheese whirls, and the fabulously fresh pretzels. The bakery is bustling all day long and a great spot to stop for coffee. Next door to True Grain Bakery is Hilary’s Cheese & Deli. Hilary Abbott and wife, Patty, create goat and cow milk cheeses at their farm just up the road from Cowichan Bay. They make great camembert and brie style cheeses as well as tomme-style cheeses which are rind washed with blackberry dessert wine from Cherry Point Vineyard located down the road from Hilary’s Farm. Their blue veined cheeses are fabulous with a glass of wine in their quaint café that overlooks the bay and the Pacific Ocean. The shop gals always have several pots of homemade soup on the stove that entice browsers to stay for lunch; roasted garlic tomato, Thai coconut chicken, three mushroom wild rice, lemony carrot lentil soup, all great soups made with fresh ingredients from the Cowichan Valley. Their baguette sandwiches are made with bread from True Grain next door and perfect with a bowl of soup. Hilary’s cheeses plus many imported cheeses as well as local preserves, vinegars and meats are available. Just a few doors down is The Udder Guys. Locally made ice cream is available in so many varieties that it is incredibly difficult to choose! Wild Blackberry is a big seller made from blackberries which grow all over the Cowichan Valley. Roasted Coconut is made from whole coconuts which The Udder guys husk and roast themselves and Strawberry Extreme is made with local Vancouver Island strawberries. The shop also has an incredible array of candy including those that will make adults feel like kids again; Sweet Tarts, Lic-A-Stick, Pop Rocks and all sorts of things that ‘kids these days’ probably never would have heard of! Cowichan Bay Village is a fabulously delicious stop to visit on South Vancouver Island.
