Nestled between Vancouver Island and mainland B.C., Gabriola Island has visitors feeling relaxed as soon as they step off the ferry.

A mere twenty minute ferry journey from the Nanaimo Harbour, this smallish island, nicknamed "Isle of the Arts", has all the convenient amenities and activities one needs for the perfect vacation.

Accomodation Options for Gabriola Island

For those looking for some much deserved rest and relaxation, B&Bs run by friendly locals are plentiful. With rates ranging between $75-$200, the styles and variety of the B&Bs are sure to cater to the visitor's tastes and budget. Visit the gabriola-accomodation link to get a better idea of what each has to offer in terms of view, comfort, beach access, etc. Warning to those traveling with pets: some will accommodate your furry friend, but not all.

If sleeping under the stars sounds more tempting, Descanso Bay Regional Park, open year-round, has a campsite located in close proximity to the ferry terminal. When staying during the busy summer months, it is best to reserve a spot well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Fun Activity Options on Gabriola Island

For the active visitor, sea kayaking, cycling, hiking, swimming and scuba diving should all suffice in satisfying that desire to increase the heart rate. Also, for a slightly less common activity, there is also the option to geocache - a form of high-tech treasure-hunting using a GPS. Geocacheing is an adventurous and fun way to explore and see certain parts of the island that would have otherwise remained hidden. Finally, there is always the option of hitting the links and playing a round at the Gabriola Golf and Country Club.

If relaxing is priority, the options are no less intriguing, nor minimal. Take a walk along the seaside trails of Drumbeg Beach or Sandwell Provincial Park where bald eagles and starfish abound. Twin Beaches offers two superb beaches perfect for lazing around, building sand castles or picnicking with family and friends on a hot summer day. Head down to the Malespina Galleries and marvel at the nature's wonderful work of art in the rock formations. The Whellbarrel Nursery, actually designed as a beautifully manicured garden selling a variety of exotic plants and trees, is a prime example of the Gabriola's serenity.

Weekend visitors should make a point of checking out Saturday market, where one can sample the local produce or better yet pick up some local artwork. A number of artists call Gabriola their home and can be found selling their crafts and artworks each Saturday morning from 10 am until noon.

Thanksgiving Studio and Gallery Tour, Home and Garden Tour and the Roxy

For dinner, The Surf Lodge serves up great food with a fantastic view, while the Silva Marina's quaint cove location will instantly put you at ease while you munch on a salmon burger and swig down a pint of beer.

Gabriola also plays host to free annual events not to be missed, such the Thanksgiving Studio & Gallery Tour in October, and the Home and Garden Tour at the end of July - just to name a few. The night should always end at The Roxy, the place to be to see live musicians and to meet some of the friendly locals.

Something magical occurs when stepping onto a small island such as Gabriola. The hustle and bustle of the mainland seems to instantly vanish, leaving relaxed visitors with little more to contemplate than the rhythmic lapping of the ocean.
