Indoor and Outdoor Learning Centers near Victoria, BC

In and around Victoria, BC are some educational sites offering activities for young children and parents.

Driving would be the preferred way access these sites, although most of them are accessible by bus. Visit BC Transit for information on public transportation.

Butterfly Garden (Brentwood Bay)

This is nice tropical garden in the middle of Saanich peninsula. It is not a real outdoor garden, but rather a closed garden. The place is warm and humid to maintain exotic flowers, pink flamingos and multiple butterflies. It is a educational center for children and parents to learn about the different stages of the life cycle of butterflies. An excellent place to spent a rainy summer day.

Adults $12, children $6.50, Under 3 years children are admitted at no charge.

In summer opening hours are 9am-5pm.

Butchart Gardens (Brentwood Bay)

Butchart Gardens is a historical botanic garden near Victoria, BC. Throughout the seasons there are new blooming flowers. This year, a new Children Pavilion hosts a bronze cast carousel. This is the most visited place in Victoria, BC. The garden also has Saturday night fireworks display.

Adults 28$, children (13-17) $14, children (5-12) $3, no charge for children under 5 years.

In summer opening hours are 9am to 10pm.

The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre (Sidney)

The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre has opened its doors on June 20th, 2009. This is an aquarium and environmental education centre that explores the wonders of the Salish Sea. The Salish Sea is the name given to the inside waters off Vancouver Island that is the traditional home of the Coast Salish people. The Centre is a great environmental education facility. Children will see and touch fishes, urchins and sea stars. A real whale skeleton is also presented. Located in the Pier building of Sidney.

Adults $12, Youth 6-17 years $6, Under 6 years admitted at no charge.

Family Fun Play (Langford)

Hosted at Ridge Recreation Center of Langford, BC. The site has opened in 2008 and offers diverse inside and outside entertainments for kids. During sunny days children can practice mini-golf. Balls and small clubs are provided by the centre. This year, the center has also opened a new water splash park to refresh kids during hot summer days. Inside is a three-level play zone including three huge slides, a small basketball zone and a Balladium with compressed air guns to shoot foam balls.

Play zone: Adults free, Children $4-9

Mini golf: Adults $6.50, children $5

Balladium: $3 per session/person

Water zone: Adults free, Children $3.

In summer: 9am-9pm.

Goldstream Park

This is a provincial park and an old temperate rain forest that offers a huge picnic/BBQ area, partially covered. The Visitor Center located few meters from the main entrance offers diverse ateliers for children to learn about the fauna and flora of the park. In the visitor center visitors will also find tea, coffee and baked goods. On the way to the Visitor Center after the concrete tunnel there is a majestic waterfall.

Hatley Castle and Royal Road University

This is a historic mansion build in 1908 with local stone. This beautiful castle is located in the middle of the huge Hatley Park facing the Esquimalt lagoon. The castle also houses a museum presenting artifacts of the past and explains the significance of the Castle in the life of Vancouver Island during the last century.

Daily: 10am15-3pm

For 60 minutes castle tour and garden: $15
