The airports serve destinations like British Columbia, Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, London, Tokyo and Beijing.
Vancouver International Airport, located in nearby Richmond, BC, hosts worldwide flights to western Canada. It is the second largest international air travel gateway on North America’s West Coast and is the major North American city closest to Asia. In 2006, it greeted 16.9 millions passengers and by year-end, expects to serve 17.5 million (the Airport Authority, 2006).
The most popular destinations to and front the airport are:
The shortest flight is from Nanaimo, BC, running 24 minutes, and the longest is from Manila, Philippines at 14.5 hours. Whether coming or going from a long or short flight, the Vancouver International Airport is a comfortable and easy hub to navigate within. In typical West Coast fashion, it is also a BC Hydro Smart Certified business, meaning many environmental steps have been taken to conserve energy, as well as features the more extensive collection of Northwest Coast Native artwork in the world.
Many local bus routes include the airport (view timetables and routes at Translink), and the free shuttles connect the Long-Term Parking Lot, South Terminal and most hotels in Richmond. Parking is easily accessible for short term or long term stays. Rates vary from $1.00/hour CDN in the South Terminal and Overflow lots (farthest away) to $2.75/half hour CDN in all other lots. Weekly rates are $69.78 CDN and monthly rates jump to $174.46 CDN. Gateway Valet & Concierge parking is also available for $20.00/hour CDN up to $101.70/week CDN. Rental cars are an easy way to go as well.
Smaller than its Vancouver counterpart, this often-overlooked airport served 502,000 passengers last year. The Fraser Valley is 72 km (43 miles) from Vancouver and only a five minute drive off of Highway #1.
WESTJET, Airspeed Aviation, BC West Air and Transat Holidays all fly out of Abbotsford, connecting Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria, Nanaimo and Boundary Bay directly.
Visitors have access to wireless internet access while waiting at the airport through Opti-Fi Networks. Unfortunately, it’s not free and costs range from $8.95/day CDN plus tax to $34.95/month CDN plus tax.
Transportation options incorporate pre-booked shuttles to the Vancouver International Airport, the Cruise Ship Terminal at Canada Place (Vancouver), Alpine Motor Inn, Ramada Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre, and Rio Motel in Abbotsford. Parking rates are $1.50 CDN an hour, $6.00 CDN for a day and $30.00 CDN for a week. Avis Rent A Car, Budget Car & Truck Rentals and National Car & Truck Rental are also all on-site.
