Victoria BC's Downtown Bakeries

Best Breads, Pastries, Cookies, Cakes and Sweets

Downtown Victoria, British Columbia is blessed with a delicious culinary culture including many fine bakeries with heavenly aromas waiting from their breads and pastries.

Within blocks of one another, these local charms are upper crust in the taste department!

Cascadia Wholefoods Bakery has Wholesome Indulgence

Cascadia Wholefoods Bakery is tucked away at 1812 Government Street just past Chinatown. With the same owner as Rebar, how can you go wrong with a little wholesome indulgence? Italian panini sandwiches are great for lunch and their daily bread features are bound to get you into a routine with Honey Cornmeal on Mondays, Calamata Olive on Fridays, and Cinnamon-Raisin Swirl on Saturdays. Everyday there is a new feature bread along with their many whole-grain loaves and rosemary garlic focaccia. Fruit pies look incredible and their sweets like the lemon slices and orange currant scones are enticing.

Bond Bond’s Scratch Baking is Sweet and Delicious

Bond Bond’s, 1010 Blanshard Street, is also making everything from scratch using as many natural and local ingredients as they can. They love their “good old-fashioned bread and baked goods” with the popular lemon leaves, cinnamon crosses, sticky buns, pecan tarts, blueberry franzipan, and alluring peanut butter cups and reverse chocolate cookies. They serve daily sandwiches on their own buns and a tempting array of breads such as cheese and onion ciabatta, tamari roasted pumpkin seed, onion boards and asiago bread.

Baguettes Plus Pâté and Salmon Rillettes at Bon Rouge Boulangerie

Newest on the scene is Bon Rouge Boulangerie, on Gordon Street, tucked in beside the Fairmont Empress (between Humboldt and Courtney Streets). Their lemon curd puffs keep many regulars coming back for more along with their house-made pâté and salmon rillettes. They create small sizes of cakes and pies like the petites apple pies and pecan pies as well as chocolate cakes, lemon drops, and raspberry kisses perfect for entertaining. There are sandwiches and paninis for lunch on their own French breads along with brioche and croissants. Or enjoy a coffee break with a ganache tarte or a chocolate espresso brownie.

The Dutch Bakery & Café is a Victoria Culinary Icon

Victoria wouldn’t be the same without the Dutch Bakery and Café at 718 Fort Street. This iconic destination has four generations of Shadelee’s working in the family business. In the last 52 years, not much has changed at “The Dutch” and that is definitely a good thing! Have lunch at the counter then peruse the pastry cases for dessert. Their vanilla slices are a top seller with rich custard, flaky pastry, and a thin layer of icing on top. The Dollar Roll is also incredibly popular created with almond paste which is made fresh in-house each week. Their fruit breads and loaves are also hard to resist along with the sea of cookies, chocolates and cakes plus there are savory items like sausage rolls.

Victoria bakeries could be the best thing since sliced bread!
