The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver is no different than any other before it - a severe shortage of rooms and sky high prices. Try some of these clever alternatives.

The 2010 Olympics are coming to Vancouver, offering winter sporting event fans the chance to see world’ s best athletes compete for that all important gold medal. There is sure to be a massive influx of people from all over the world to the city in February and March 2010.

For anyone looking for accommodations here are some of the best options in Vancouver that are both practical and affordable.

Rent a Home instead of a Hotel Room

If the idea of a home-away-from-home experience is appealing, a rental home could be ideal. Many companies have a wide selection of rental properties in and around the Vancouver area, as well as the small villages in the surrounding areas of Whistler Village.

This is an ideal option for families or large corporate groups who need space, cooking facilities and laundry.

Hotel Options for Vancouver 2010 are Varied

Vancouver is a large city that has a lot of reasonably priced hotel accommodation that would be the perfect for people wanting to watch the games with relatively little fuss. Unfortunately, most of the good and affordable rooms have already been booked.

Hotels, during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics may be very expensive. They also tend to be the most popular option for a lot of people, and much of the city’s hotel room inventory is selling out fast. Check related websites for hotel and event ticket packages. These will no doubt be excellent accommodations and easily accessible to the events. A fun option might be the much anticipated floating cruise ship hotel.

Homestay House Sharing Programs (A B&B Arrangement of Sorts)

An affordable and exciting option for the Olympic Games is homestay or house-sharing with the residents of Vancouver. Many local people are renting out rooms in their own home to allow a traveler to be part of the Winter Olympic experience. This is a perfect way to get to know the local people.

For those coming for the Olympic Games who really don’t mind bunking with strangers, this is a fantastic option that costs relatively little and should be readily available even during busy times. This accommodation option also has the benefit of learning about this spectacular pacific coast city and tourism from knowledgeable local residents.

Hostels are a Low Cost Accommodation Options

For budget travellers a Vancouver or area hostel might be the ideal choice. Hostel accommodation is ideal for those who are travelling with friends and want to be close to the city.

A hostel is a great way to meet fun, interesting, like-minded people. The accommodations are basic, but for the chance to be in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics and explore the area on the cheap, who cares! Just try and stick with reputable hostels and perhaps try booking through Hostelling International first.

Out of Town Accommodations

If all of the options above are not available or not exactly the desired accommodation choice, it might be wise to look outside the heart of Vancouver and away from the busy city center. The locations below are some options to explore relatively close to Vancouver:

  • Whistler – Depending on events being attended by the ticket holders, Whistler and area may be the best option. Warning: be prepared for expensive hotel rooms.
  • Vancouver Island – A lot quieter than Vancouver, a whole lot cheaper and a great way to see other parts of British Columbia. It is also close to the action even through it is across the Straight of Georgia. Highly recommended is the Painted Turtle Guesthouse in Nanaimo – which is homey, affordable and just a ferry ride away from Vancouver.
  • Pemberton – A twenty-five minute car trip to cheaper and quieter accommodations.

Good luck in finding the perfect accommodation to fully experience supernatural British Columbia and enjoy the 2010 Olympic Games.
