Travel to the Vancouver suburb of Richmond, BC for some of the best Asian restaurants outside of Asia.

Richmond, BC is a hotbed of Asian restaurants. Located just south of Vancouver, the city is home to the Vancouver International Airport and is surrounded on three sides by the Fraser River.

Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian and Taiwanese Cuisine

The “Golden Village” in Richmond is at the heart of world cuisine. Restaurants serving up delicious food bump shoulders with Asian malls, bakeries and cafés. This is also where Chinese New Year’s celebrations are held.

The vibe has a semblance of busy Hong Kong without the architecture. 60% of the population is Asian, so the over 375 restaurants thrive with delectable Asian food. Below are a few restaurants that stand out from the pack, but feel free to add any other recommendations in the comments box at the bottom. Happy eating!

Posh

  • 1123- 3779 Sexsmith Road
  • Phone: (604) 303-7674

The art of Japanese sukiyaki has finally been introduced to British Columbia. Posh restaurant sets diners up with an iron pot at the centre of their table. They then bring in thinly-sliced beef along with a list of over 30 ingredients to choose from.

From there, guests simmer their own vegetables in the tasty broth for a healthy meal. Don’t worry: the staff walk diners through the entire process, encouraging them to try the raw egg and generating a communal experience. Who knew cooking could be so fun?

Shiang Garden Seafood Restaurant

  • 2200- 4540 No. 3 Road
  • Phone: (604) 273-8858

Up two flights of concrete stairs, the doors open into a large space filled with warm colours and crystal chandeliers. The bustling staff and often-filled tables buzz with noteworthy shark fin dumplings and Cantonese-style cuisine.

Think fresh seafood and a more understated taste than other regions in China. They also have a large Cantonese dim sum.

Shanghai River Restaurant

  • 110- 7831 Westminster Highway
  • Phone: (604) 233-8885

Reservations are almost always a must at Shanghai River Restaurant. Approximately 6,000 made-to-order dumplings are made per day in the partially-open kitchen concept. Many orders of a variety of dumplings are guaranteed satisfaction.

Also of note are the hand pulled Shanghainese noodles that are perfectly plump. And there’s no way to go wrong with the Shanghai river pancakes.

Vogue Chinese Restaurant

  • 1118- 3779 Sexsmith Road
  • Phone: (604) 244-8885

An interesting mix of ultra sleek and modern décor rubs elbows with Taiwanese cuisine. There is a Szechuan influence and dishes get high marks for their colourful presentation.

The menu is fun for non-Asians, as there are translations for every dish with a bit of wit. Servers are friendly and are happy to help with recommendations and advice.
